What's Da-a-luz?

After twenty years of midwifery practice and many summers chatting to student midwives, Vanessa Brooks director of the Oasis began to realise there are glaring gaps of  necessary knowledge in present midwifery training.

We are proud to present our project that creates post modern training for midwives across Europe. Creating a sustainable network of professionals to support families and each other.

We hold a space for the midwives persecuted around the globe to share their infinite wisdom and rest their tired bones.

Our original project, the mother school is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Southern Spain.

We have gathered the sharpest, most passionate minds in midwifery to create a centre of wisdom away from modern medicine, protocol and insurance issues which stop true midwifery from flourishing as a profession. Rather than fighting a non functioning system, we are creating a new paradigm… Starting afresh.

A little about the director of the Oasis Vanessa Brooks

DA~A~LUZ was created by myself, Vanessa Brooks, I was lucky enough to learn my midwifery skills in the same way as Ina May Gaskin; empirically “with woman” in an incredible community in the South of Spain.

Over 20 years many, many babies have been born on the mountain side with the support and love of a tribe.  Two of my children were born there in my teepee – both beautiful births. I knew nothing of birth before living in this paradise, but for some reason folk kept asking me to accompany them on their journeys!

I became the midwife. I studied hundreds of books about birth, but it was the actual births that taught me, and still do 20 years later, to be With Woman in her most instinctual, intimate moments and this was the real gift. I thank each one of those families for trusting me to guide them.

My first experience within a hospital setting was to feed my passion to change birth.  A ‘normal’ birth was, it seemed, the most terrible experience, the woman lying on her back, this beautiful mother was cut and her baby dragged from her… This account, compared to the ecstatic, if often long and hard births I had seen, was truly a hideous sight.

This fired my interest in looking at birth in other countries, surely women in more ‘modern’ places were not enduring this experience? Well, apparently yes! Birth practices across Europe were not serving families leaving damage and trauma in many.

I became a Birth Activist travelling the world with Midwifery today, alongside Ina May and her fantastic colleagues, studying what were the root causes of the present birth culture. What I discovered was that midwives were trained in a medical model not at all suited to good birth culture. From this realisation Da a Luz the Midwifery Oasis was born.

What's Da-a-luz Germany?

After seven years of midwifery training and many curriculums, Vanessa Brooks decided in the beginning of 2020 to spread the wisdom of alternative midwifery skills and knowledge over Europe. She decided to pass on her experience with the holistic midwifery school to people in other european countries to build branches.
Nina Korth, mother of 5 and in germany trained doula joined the Da-a-luz Oasis in southern Spain right at the beginning about seven years ago. She lived in the community and experienced the rise of the wonderful natural project over many years. As a German she returned many times to Spain and always stayed in touch with Vanessa Brooks and Da-a-luz. Now time has come to bring Da-a-luz Oasis Germany into life. It's a big honour and a task for life. Soon our group of Da-a-luz Oasis Germany will extend and grow.
